New York City, being the business capital of the United States, also happens to be one of the largest spots for drug use, distribution, and sale in the country. Every type of drug and associated addiction can be found in New York City. New York City has had problems with vagrancy, organized crime, public alcoholism, and drug abuse for quite some time. This can be expected in an area with such a large population. Because of organized crime, drugs are distributed with relative ease amongst the city. Complicated group hierarchy’s and overall mystery associated with organized crime groups make them difficult for law enforcement to completely flush out. As an addict, living in this type of environment can be very difficult as the drugs are more than readily available to them at all times of the day or night.
Because of the widespread drug use in New York City, a good variety of detox centers exist within all areas of the city. These detox centers are in place to provide safe and effective detox in a medically supervised environment. Medication is administered in various forms and degrees based on the type of addiction and level of dependency. These medications effectively replace the drug in an individuals system, calm cravings, and reduce discomfort.
Detox is not the same thing as rehabilitation. Detox is the physical body and brain cleaning of a substance from a patent’s body. Rehabilitation deals with the mental aspect of addiction; many believe rehabilitation is the most important aspect of the recovery process. There are many who have been to detox several times due to continuous relapses. Rehabilitation, by way of 24 hour care and professional counseling, teach an individual how to cope without the use of substance. Once a patient learns what situations trigger cravings for substance and how to avoid and/or deal with those situations, long term sobriety becomes a possibility. The patient also learns what emotional root causes may have led them to the path of addiction. The counselor will show the patient that there are different, more positive roads available to them, they must simply learn to start valuing their lives.
